About Juvéderm

Juvéderm is the latest advance in dermal filler options, brought to you by Allergan, the makers of Botox Cosmetic®. Juvéderm is hyaluronic acid in the form of a colourless gel which is injected into facial tissue. Juvéderm gives the face a smooth and natural-looking appearance by softening fine lines and wrinkles and restoring lost volume. Juvéderm’s smooth gel provides a long-lasting natural look and feel.

What is hyaluronic acid (HA)/cross-linked hyaluronic acid?

HA is a naturally-occurring complex sugar found in most tissues of the human body such as skin and cartilage. The average adult human body contains 7-8g of HA, approximately half of which is found in the skin, where it plays a vital role in maintaining normal skin structure and function. HA is gradually lost from the skin over time as a result of both internal (age, sex, estrogen status) and external (changes in temperature, wind, sun, medication) factors. There is also a decrease in the production of HA and the redistribution of HA from the epidermis to the dermis. ”Cross-linking” is a scientific process in which individual chains of hyaluronic acid are bound or “cross-linked” together. A higher concentration of cross-linked HA ensures greater stability of the product in the skin, which results in a longer duration of effect and minimizes the need for touch-up injections.

What do dermal fillers do?

Dermal fillers are placed below the skin’s surface to diminish the depth of facial folds and wrinkles, which begin to appear as the body ages and skin loses elasticity and volume due to the naturally occurring decrease of HA.

What makes Juvéderm different from other dermal fillers?

Juvéderm injectable smooth gel employs its patented HYLACROSS® technology to provide one of the highest concentrations of cross-linked hyaluronic acid of any currently available HA dermal fillers for long-lasting results. This advanced manufacturing process also works to create a smooth gel that flows easily into the skin and provides a smooth, natural look and feel. Most other hyaluronic acid dermal fillers have a granular gel consistency. Juvéderm is the first hyaluronic acid dermal filler that has demonstrated its safety and effectiveness in patients of all skin types and colours. As well, no allergy test is required with Juvéderm.

With Juvéderm, you can:

• Fill lines, wrinkles, folds and scars.
• Increase and enhance the volume of the lips.
• Revitalize and rehydrate the skin.
• Enhance the cheekbones and soften the facial contours.

Is treatment with Juvéderm painful?

Juvéderm is injected directly into the skin using a fine needle to minimize potential discomfort; however, some discomfort may occur during and following the injection. Dr. Albert may numb the treatment area to further minimize soreness or tenderness. The smooth gel also aids to minimize discomfort during the injection period.

How long does treatment usually take?

The treatment process takes approximately 30 minutes. You will also need to allow time to consult with Dr. Albert prior to treatment.

Why should you choose Juvéderm?

Juvéderm is the “next generation” and most technologically advanced dermal filler containing one of the highest concentrations of non-animal cross-linked hyaluronic acids available. The majority of patients see results immediately after their treatment with optimal results lasting for six months or longer, some only requiring a single treatment. The smooth gel of Juvéderm delivers a natural look and feel.

What to expect at your Juvéderm treatment

When you arrive

If this is your first visit, Dr. Albert will ask about your medical history, including any allergies you may have or medications you may be taking, and will tell you more about treatment for wrinkles and folds with Juvéderm.

Things to discuss with Dr. Albert

• Known hypersensitivity to hyaluronic acid
• Diseases affecting the immune system
• Pregnant or breast-feeding women

Determining your treatment needs

Dr. Albert will examine the soft tissue of your face to assess the depth of wrinkles and folds and determine your specific needs. He will usually take pre-treatment photographs so you can see the difference after treatment!

Before the procedure

Although anaesthesia is not required, Dr. Albert may use topical or injectable anaesthesia to numb the treatment area first. You will be asked to thoroughly wash the treatment area with soap and water, and Dr. Albert will then swab the area with alcohol or other antiseptic.

The procedure

Dr. Albert will ease Juvéderm injectable gel under your skin to enhance facial features or fill wrinkles and folds. Following the injection, he may gently massage the treated areas. The procedure is quick and easy. The injection, itself usually takes approximately 30 minutes.

Seeing results

You will see an immediate improvement in the treatment areas. Most patients need one treatment to achieve optimal wrinkle smoothing, and the results last for 6 months or more. However, results may vary and correction is temporary. Supplemental “touch-up” treatments may be required to achieve and maintain optimal results.

After your Juvéderm treatment

What is the recovery time following a Juvéderm treatment?

Treatment requires minimal down time and most patients return to their normal routines right away. Within the first 24 hours of treatment, patients should avoid
• Strenuous exercise
• Consumption of alcoholic beverages
• Extended exposure to sun, heat or freezing temperatures

Exposure to any of the above should be minimized until any initial swelling and redness has resolved.

What are the potential side effects with dermal fillers?

In clinical studies, most side effects were mild to moderate in nature, with a short duration of 7 days or less. The most common side effects included temporary injection site reactions: redness pain/tenderness, firmness, swelling, minor lumps/bumps, bruising, itching and discoloration.

Other things to consider

If you experience swelling at the injection site, an ice pack may be applied for a brief period. Dr. Albert will inform you when makeup may be applied after your treatment.
